task 1

This is a edited video of my improvisation. There are several tasks.
1. Opposition of external(hard or stiff) and internal(soft and float)
2.&3. A invisiable opponent, travel version and centered version.
4. Duo based on the theme of manipulation (ideally, it was about locking and unlocking, but it somehow shift 5. during the process, I might try to stick to the original idea which is locking and unlocking of body parts, it should be more about how to find or look for space from the locked joint/body part.)
6. The last section is based on push hand but the purpose was shifted from attack to touch our faces.

  1. Hi Bruce!
I have a primary question first then a couple of comments on this first improvisation. For you project, what is the overall internal sense you are going for? What do you think/feel/struggle with/love about the many aspects of movement/Bruce you are trying to reach and share?
I am intrigued by the idea of exploring the edge of martial movement and dance, and I think as practitioners of both, it it difficult to not overlap them anyway. But I am curious about what your internal dialogue is around this.
In Part 1, the thing I noticed most was the clear articulation of your hands and feet, with a sinewy torso and extension through and into the limbs.
Part 2 was most interesting to me in its fluidity of movement, followed by a breakdown or sharp conclusion of that original movement idea.
The floor section was most intriguing, I think because I began to see some piece of your humanity. You seemed lonely, sad, broken. Locked inside some restriction and trying to physical puzzle your way out.
Part 3, in the retreat I got a strong sense of you being pushed across the space, in the advance, just the opposite, you were doing the pushing. The third line I noticed your pelvis the most, its steady movement across the floor. I actually wanted to see more involvement of your lower body in space as part of this, but that is just my own personal desire!
The dragging section across reminded me of the floor section previously, where I had a strong sense of loneliness, defeat, broken.
Part 4 with the woman, you are mostly manipulating her movement, she is only responding to your input. I wanted to see how you would respond if she initiated movement as well.
Part 5- faces. This would be so lovely to video! The gestures are tender, beautiful. It would be interesting to see you create a bigger movement phrase separate from the gestures, then attempt to bring those back into that material. I missed, again, the sense of connection through the floor, through your legs as you would if you were doing push hands. Perhaps playing a little push hands first, maybe even creating this with someone who plays tai chi or kung fu would be good. ( Wanna come to Seattle and play with me?)
Anyway, I hope that is helpful. is this the kind of feedback you want Bruce? If not let me know how best to assist you! I am really honored to be your advisor and excited by your ideas!

  2. Hi Michele,
Thanks for your feedback, it's very helpful.
I have been thinking about your question about my internal dialogue. I feel like I dont have a concret answer for that at this moment, I think i would like to start with movement and see where it will bring me. And your feedback gave me some idea about the possibily, i am thinking what elements compose my loneliness or sadness, what is the opposite side of it, is this solo body able to show both extremes? the word "balance" kept coming out from my head, and also touch, hug, grip, lock, unlock, connect and disconnect.
But yes, I feel like i dont have much intentional or emotional factors at this point, i am still looking for the "goal", or what the goal is going to be.
i think i am going to try to puzzle something together soon. I think that will help me to figure it out more.
    Thank you again, Michele
    Bruce
